Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Severe Thunderstorms Expected for High Terrain through Phoenix, Pinal, and Tucson’s Forecast Area for July 1st, 2025

Arizona Weather Force has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch effective Tuesday, July 1st, 2025, for the following zones;

Issued Zones: Pima, Pinal, Maricopa, Yavapai County … West and South half of Gila County … Flagstaff … The Grand Canyon … Santa Cruz County …

Date Issued: July 1st, 2025 at 10:45am PDT

Discussion: Latest satellite images shows developing clouds over the mountain areas as of mid-morning.  Observations put strong instability developing across the watch area as well.  This will continue to get stronger as we move through today.  As the official forecast here stated beforehand, monitoring of these zones for today would be likely for an issuance of a higher risk alert.  This Severe Thunderstorm Watch is for severe thunderstorms developing over the high terrain, with their outflow boundaries moving southwestward into the low terrain locations later afternoon into the evening hours.  Definitely seeing the outflow coming out of Gila County through Maricopa to San Tan being the strongest one of today’s watch zone.

WEDNESDAY MORNING:  Expecting the outflow from Tucson to curve up through Western Arizona overnight, which will bring thunderstorm development with a south to north movement along the Colorado River Valley by Wednesday morning before sunrise and going into the day.  Thunderstorm Watches were issued earlier this morning over there for that event.  Refer to Reference A link for that watch.

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON/EVENING:  The same exact areas for this watch today will have a stronger event.  There is a chance that the rare ‘ENHANCED SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH’ will be issued, which is the highest class watch for severe thunderstorms issued here at Arizona Weather Force.  Stay tuned for updates to that on whichever way you do have with us.
